US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing up to 100% tariffs on imported patented and branded pharmaceutical products, along with their active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), citing national security and the need to boost domestic US manufacturing.
The move, announced on April 2, 2026, under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, targets foreign-made innovative drugs that lack "most favored nation" pricing agreements or commitments to onshore production in the United States. Generics and unbranded drugs are explicitly exempted, shielding the bulk of India's pharma exports to the US.
