Trump Slaps 100% Tariff on Branded Pharma Imports: Sun Pharma and Glenmark Most Exposed Among Indian Firms

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing up to 100% tariffs on imported patented and branded pharmaceutical products, along with their active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), citing national security and the need to boost domestic US manufacturing. The move, announced on April 2, 2026, under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, targets foreign-made innovative drugs that lack "most favored nation" pricing agreements or commitments to onshore production in the United States. Generics and unbranded drugs are explicitly exempted, shielding the bulk of India's pharma exports to the US. Among Indian drugmakers,

SPARC
harma and
GLENMARK
harmaceuticals are seen as the most vulnerable. Both companies have a stronger focus on patented/specialty products and maintain direct commercial operations in the US specialty drug segment, making their innovative portfolios more exposed to the new levies.
