has approved a ₹2,896 crore capital budgetary outlay for setting up a greenfield shipyard at Raichak, West Bengal. The approval was taken at the company’s 423rd Board meeting held on September 21, 2026, and is aimed at expanding GRSE’s shipbuilding capacity across both the naval and commercial segments. The Raichak project is part of GRSE’s broader capacity expansion programme announced in August, under which the company had planned investments across three facilities at Raichak, Shalimar and Khidderpore, with the overall earlier announced capex amounting to ₹2,670 crore. The latest ₹2,896 crore approval provides a higher, specific capital outlay for the Raichak greenfield facility. The new shipyard is expected to provide additional infrastructure for handling a larger volume and wider range of shipbuilding projects, including naval vessels as well as commercial ships. This expansion could strengthen GRSE’s ability to undertake larger and more complex orders as demand for indigenous shipbuilding and maritime infrastructure develops. The investment also aligns with the broader push toward strengthening India’s domestic shipbuilding ecosystem and reducing dependence on overseas capacity.
