Exide Industries Reinforces Lithium-Ion Strategy with ₹80 Crore Capital Infusion
Exide Industries Ltd. (EIL), India's leading battery manufacturer, has announced a further investment of ₹80 crore (₹0.8 billion) into its wholly-owned subsidiary, Exide Energy Solutions Ltd. (EESL). This strategic capital infusion, made via a rights-based issue, underscores the company's unwavering commitment to establishing a dominant position in the domestic lithium-ion battery market.
This latest round of funding is earmarked for the ongoing development of EESL's state-of-the-art, multi-gigawatt lithium-ion cell manufacturing plant in Bengaluru. The investment raises EIL's total capital commitment to the subsidiary to a significant ₹3,882 crore (₹38.8 billion), signaling strong confidence in the project's future. The transaction was completed at arm's length and maintains EIL's 100% ownership of EESL.
The greenfield project is pivotal to Exide's long-term vision. It aims to cater to the surging demand for advanced battery solutions from two high-growth sectors: electric mobility (EVs) and stationary energy storage systems. By localizing the production of lithium-ion cells, modules, and packs, Exide is strategically positioning itself to capture a substantial share of the market and reduce reliance on imports.
For investors, this move represents a clear and decisive step by Exide to diversify its portfolio beyond traditional lead-acid batteries and align with the future of energy. The consistent and substantial investment in EESL is a testament to the management's focus on long-term value creation and technological advancement in a rapidly evolving industry. This positions Exide to be a key beneficiary of India's clean energy transition.
