ICICI Bank Q3 FY26 Earnings Update: Core Stability Amid Regulatory Provisions

ICICIBANK
Executive Summary ICICI Bank reported a mixed set of numbers for the quarter ended December 31, 2025. While headline profitability faced headwinds due to a one-time regulatory provision mandated by the RBI, core asset quality demonstrated sequential improvement. Significantly, the Board approved a two-year extension for MD & CEO Mr. Sandeep Bakhshi, providing leadership continuity. Key Financial Highlights Profitability Impacted by One-Offs: Net Profit stood at ₹11,318 crore, a decline of 4% YoY (vs ₹11,792 crore in Q3 FY25). This fell short of street estimates (₹12,379 crore), primarily due to elevated provisions. Net Interest Income (NII): NII grew 7.7% YoY to ₹21,932 crore. While strictly below expectations of ₹22,092 crore, the bank maintained steady growth momentum. Provisioning Spike: Total provisions rose significantly to ₹2,556 crore (vs ₹1,227 crore YoY). Regulatory Note: The RBI directed a specific standard asset provision of ₹1,283 crore regarding an agricultural priority sector lending (PSL) portfolio deemed not fully compliant with classification norms. Management clarifies this is a compliance adjustment, not a reflection of credit risk. Asset Quality & Balance Sheet Sequential Improvement: Asset quality metrics strengthened despite the provisioning noise. Gross NPA: Improved to 1.53% (down from 1.58% QoQ). Net NPA: Declined to 0.37% (down from 0.39% QoQ). Slippages: Gross slippages for the quarter were ₹5,356 crore. Management asserts comfort with the overall quality of the book and has factored in potential impacts from external tariffs. Leadership & Governance CEO Tenure Extension: The Board approved the re-appointment of Mr. Sandeep Bakhshi as MD & CEO for an additional two years (effective Oct 4, 2026, to Oct 3, 2028). Investor Sentiment: This move removes leadership overhang and is viewed positively by analysts, ensuring strategic stability while the bank grooms future succession.
