Market Extends Gains for Fourth Day; Nifty Closes Above 25,100

Indian equity benchmarks concluded the session on October 7, 2025, with modest gains, marking a fourth consecutive day of advances. However, the indices retreated from their intraday highs, signaling caution. The NSE Nifty 50 rose by 31 points (0.12%) to close at 25,108, while the S&P BSE Sensex gained 137 points (0.17%) to settle at 81,927. A noteworthy observation was the market breadth, which favored decliners, suggesting that the rally was not broad-based. In contrast, the Nifty Midcap 100 index outperformed, climbing 274 points to end at 58,289. Sectoral Performance & Key Movers The market's upside was primarily supported by index heavyweight Reliance Industries, which gained nearly 1%, and a resilient banking sector. The Nifty Bank index rose 135 points to 56,239, though profit-taking was evident in major constituents like Axis Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank. Railways on the Fast Track: Railway-linked stocks surged after the Union Cabinet approved projects valued at ₹24,000 crore. IRCON International rallied 7%, and Titagarh Rail Systems saw significant gains. Telecom Sector Buzz: Vodafone Idea was a standout performer, jumping nearly 9% following positive developments in the Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) case. Bharti Airtel also closed 1% higher. Stock-Specific Action: Indraprastha Gas Ltd. (IGL) surged 6% on reports of a favorable change in tax implications for gas sourcing. Conversely, Tata Motors declined 2% despite resuming production at a JLR unit, while Trent fell 2% on subdued Q2 growth projections. Midcap Highlights Top Midcap Gainers: Divi’s Laboratories, Titagarh Rail, Torrent Power, Amber Enterprises, and Federal Bank. Top Midcap Losers: CESC, Jindal Steel & Power, Britannia, HDFC AMC, Bank of Baroda, and Hindustan Copper. In summary, while the headline indices maintained their upward momentum driven by select heavyweights and positive sector-specific news, the negative market breadth warrants a cautious outlook.
