Ola Electric Board Approves ₹1,500 Crore Capital Raise; Signals Strategic Expansion into Energy Storage

OLAELEC
the Board of Directors of Ola Electric Mobility Ltd. approved a proposal to raise up to ₹1,500 crore. This capital infusion is subject to shareholder approval. The company will maintain flexibility, with the board approving raising capital via a public offer, rights issue, Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP), private placement, or other permissible modes. While the company has not formally earmarked the proceeds, the raise is strongly correlated with its new, capital-intensive growth pillar: Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The "Ola Shakti" Initiative This fundraising announcement comes just days after Ola's major strategic launch of "Ola Shakti" on October 16, 2025, marking its entry into India's rapidly growing BESS market, an opportunity estimated at over ₹1 lakh crore. "Ola Shakti" is a line of portable BESS solutions, initially targeting the residential (B2C) market with four configurations (1.5kWh to 9.1kWh). The initiative is designed to be highly synergistic, leveraging the company's existing investment in its Gigafactory and its proprietary 4680 cell technology. This move aims to maximize Gigafactory utilization, with Ola projecting that the BESS division could consume 5 GWh of capacity annually, potentially exceeding its own automotive cell requirements. It aims to finance a strategic diversification into the high-growth BESS market while simultaneously navigating significant headwinds in its core EV scooter business. The "Ola Shakti" BESS initiative represents a significant new revenue stream and a logical expansion of Ola's core battery technology platform. It diversifies the company from the highly competitive two-wheeler market and positions it as an integrated clean energy company. This capital raise is also set against a backdrop of declining EV two-wheeler market share (falling from over 20% to sub-15%), persistent operational challenges, and a widened net loss of ₹428 crore reported in Q1 FY26.
