SBIN
India’s premier lender, State Bank of India (SBI), has released its financial results for the March quarter, presenting a mixed picture against analyst forecasts. While the bank demonstrated growth in certain key areas, it fell short of expectations in others, prompting a market reaction. Financial Performance Overview SBI's core income, or Net Interest Income (NII), exhibited a modest year-on-year growth of 4.1%, reaching ₹44,381 crore. However, this figure did not meet the CNBC-TV18 poll estimate of ₹46,487.4 crore. In contrast, the net profit for the quarter saw a 5.6% increase from the corresponding period last year, amounting to ₹19,684 crore. This performance slightly exceeded the anticipated figure of ₹19,455.4 crore. Asset Quality and Operational Metrics The bank maintained stable asset quality on a sequential basis. The Gross Non-Performing Asset (NPA) ratio improved to 1.49% from 1.57% in the preceding December quarter. The Net NPA ratio remained steady at 0.39%. However, SBI's pre-provisioning operating profit experienced a sequential decline of 16%, dropping to ₹27,704 crore from ₹32,862 crore. Additionally, provisions saw a decrease, falling to ₹2,872 crore compared to ₹4,507 crore in the prior quarter. Other income also reported a decline, standing at ₹17,314 crore, down from ₹24,367 crore in the previous year. Margin Analysis For the full financial year, SBI reported a whole bank Net Interest Margin (NIM) of 2.91% and a domestic NIM of 3.03%. Focusing specifically on the March quarter, the whole bank NIM stood at 2.81%, while the domestic NIM was recorded at 2.93%. Market Reaction Following the announcement of these results, the market responded with a downward adjustment in SBI's share price. The stock experienced a decline of 5.1%, trading at the day's low of ₹1,036.2.
