Sterling & Wilson Renewable Energy Q2 Financial Review

SWSOLAR
Sterling & Wilson Renewable Energy Ltd. (SWREL) reported challenging results for the second quarter, leading to a significant market reaction with its stock declining by over 7% on October 17. The company posted a substantial net loss of ₹473 crore, a sharp reversal from the net profit of ₹7 crore recorded in the corresponding quarter last year. This return to losses is the primary concern. Despite this, revenue showed strong growth, increasing by nearly 70% year-on-year to ₹1,748 crore. However, profitability metrics deteriorated severely. Earnings Before Interest, Tax, Depreciation and Amortisation (EBITDA) plummeted by approximately 79% to ₹3.7 crore. Consequently, the EBITDA margin contracted sharply to just 0.2% from 1.7% in the year-ago quarter, indicating operational margins have been reduced to nearly zero. The market responded negatively to the margin contraction and net loss, with the stock trading at ₹225.83, a 7.1% decrease for the day. This compounds the year-to-date decline, which now stands at 51%. Investors should consider the factors driving the operational losses despite robust top-line growth when evaluating future prospects.
