IDBI Bank: Employees Forum Opposes Fairfax Stake Sale, Seeks Parliamentary Review Over Governance & Sovereignty Concerns

The United Forum of IDBI Officers & Employees has strongly opposed the government’s reported decision to sell a controlling 60.72% stake (30.48% Govt + 30.24% LIC) in IDBI Bank to Canada’s Fairfax Financial Holdings. The forum expressed concerns over long-term financial sovereignty and urged immediate public disclosure of the proposal, review of the deal, and a parliamentary discussion before any final decision. This comes amid Fairfax emerging as frontrunner with a sweetened offer around ₹81 per share in a potential $5.5 billion transaction. The opposition highlights employee interests and could lead to better safeguards for jobs, service conditions, and reservations, fostering transparency in the privatisation process. It may prompt the government to negotiate stronger terms, ensuring national interest alignment. Successful resolution could still attract foreign capital, modernize IDBI’s operations under private management, and unlock value for shareholders. The resistance risks delaying the long-pending stake sale, creating regulatory and political uncertainty that could weigh on IDBI’s stock performance and operations. Prolonged limbo might affect employee morale, customer confidence, and the bank’s ability to compete. It also raises broader concerns about execution of disinvestment agenda and potential valuation erosion if global investor sentiment sours. Near-term, this could pressure $IDBI shares and impact other PSU banks like State Bank of India (SBI), $BANKBARODA (BOB), $PNB (PNB), and $CANBK due to sector sentiment on privatisation. Private banks such as HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank may benefit from any slowdown in PSU reforms.
