Closing Bell: Bears regained control as the Nifty slipped below the 25,100 mark and the Sensex tumbled nearly 770 points.

provided some support on the upside. All sectoral indices closed in negative territory, with capital goods, power, realty, PSU banks, and media stocks declining 2–3 percent. The BSE midcap index declined 1.5 percent, while the smallcap index dropped 2 percent. Indian benchmark indices wrapped up the session in the red on January 23. At the close, the Sensex fell 769.67 points, or 0.94 percent, to 81,537.70, while the Nifty slid 241.25 points, or 0.95 percent, to settle at 25,048.65.
