Indian equity benchmarks closed lower on January 5,

As selling pressure in IT, telecom, and oil & gas stocks weighed on the markets. The Sensex declined 322.39 points, or 0.38 percent, to finish at 85,439.62, while the Nifty slipped 78.25 points, or 0.30 percent, to settle at 26,250.30. On the Nifty, major laggards included

WIPRO
, and
ONGC
. On the positive side, stocks such as
NESTLEIND

BEL
,
EICHERMOT
,
ASIANPAINT
, and
TATASTEEL
ended higher. The BSE midcap and smallcap indices closed largely unchanged. Sectorally, IT, oil & gas, and telecom indices fell between 0.5 and 1 percent. In contrast, the realty index surged 2 percent, consumer durables gained 1 percent, while metal and FMCG indices advanced around 0.5 percent each.
