Indian Stock Market Volatile: Sensex Recovers Near 76,500, Nifty Approaches 23,700
Indian stock markets are likely to remain volatile today as weak global signals weigh on investor sentiment. Sensex recovered slightly to trade around 76,500, while Nifty 50 hovered near 23,700 after a weak start. Markets opened lower on Thursday, influenced by escalating Iran–US geopolitical tensions and a surge in Brent crude oil prices. Earlier in the session, Sensex dropped nearly 1,000 points, opening at 76,369 compared to the previous close of 76,863. Similarly, Nifty 50 started the day at 23,674, down 192 points (0.80%) from the prior close of 23,866. The fall in GIFT Nifty, which slipped 195 points, signaled a gap-down opening for domestic benchmarks. Investor caution has also been driven by continued selling from foreign portfolio investors (FPIs), though domestic institutional investors (DIIs) have provided some buying support. Global factors continue to pressure markets. Rising oil prices and intensifying tensions in West Asia have triggered risk-averse sentiment across international markets, impacting Asian equities including India. Meanwhile, Brent crude futures surged close to the $100 per barrel mark amid ongoing conflict involving Iran and concerns over oil tanker routes through the Strait of Hormuz. The broader market remains under strain as there are no clear signs of de-escalation in the Middle East crisis. In the previous trading session, Nifty ended 394 points (1.63%) lower at 23,866, while Sensex declined 1,342 points (1.72%) to close at 76,863.
