Market Wrap: Benchmarks slide for third straight day; Sensex slips 271 pts, Nifty below 25,200
In today’s trade, the Indian rupee hit a new record low of 91.74 against the US dollar before settling at 91.70, weaker than its previous close of 90.97. Indian equities extended their decline for a third consecutive session on January 21, weighed down by subdued global sentiment. Concerns stemming from geopolitical tensions around Greenland and a steep sell-off in Japanese government bonds dampened investor confidence. Persistent selling pressure pulled the benchmark indices below their 200-day moving averages for the first time in nearly eight months. Markets began the day on a weak footing, and continued selling dragged the Nifty below the 25,000 level intraday—its first breach since October 6, 2025. However, bargain hunting in select counters helped the index rebound from its lows, allowing it to finish above the 25,100 mark. At the close, the Sensex declined 270.84 points, or 0.33 percent, to settle at 81,909.63, while the Nifty shed 75 points, or 0.30 percent, ending at 25,157.50.
