NTPC
Takes Major Leap in Nuclear Energy: Plans for 700–1,600 MW Power Projects Across India

State-owned power producer

NTPC
Limited is preparing to set up a series of nuclear power projects with capacities of 700 MW, 1,000 MW, and 1,600 MW at multiple locations across the country. This marks one of the company’s most significant steps toward diversifying its energy portfolio beyond coal-based generation. Senior officials indicate that NTPC intends to secure nearly 30 gigawatts of nuclear capacity as part of India’s long-term national goal of achieving 100 gigawatts of nuclear power by 2047. To advance this objective, NTPC is currently evaluating site options in several states, including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Andhra Pradesh. Each proposed site will require formal approval from India’s nuclear regulator, the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB). From a technology standpoint,
NTPC
C plans to use indigenously developed Pressurized Heavy-Water Reactors (PHWRs) for its 700 MW and 1,000 MW reactors. These reactors are known for their reliability and suitability for India’s nuclear ecosystem. For the larger 1,600 MW units, the company is considering collaborations with international technology partners, aiming to integrate advanced global reactor designs into India’s power infrastructure. Simultaneously,
NTPC
is strengthening its long-term fuel logistics. The company has signed a preliminary agreement with Uranium Corporation of India Ltd (UCIL) to jointly assess and explore uranium assets overseas, ensuring a stable and diversified supply of nuclear fuel in the future.
