Sensex Drops 200 Points as Trump Doubles Tariffs; Nifty Dips Below 24,550

Indian benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty50 opened lower for the third straight session on Thursday, as investor sentiment weakened following the U.S. decision to impose an additional 25% tariff on imports. The updated U.S. tariffs will be implemented in two stages an initial 25% increase taking effect tonight (Eastern Time), followed by a further 25% hike set to begin 21 days after the order is signed. Meanwhile, ahead of the tariff announcement on Wednesday, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) retained its GDP growth projection at 6.5%, minimizing concerns over possible economic disruptions. On the sectoral front, stocks in the auto, metal, and oil & gas segments opened in negative territory. In the broader market, both midcap and smallcap indices traded lower during early hours. In Wednesday’s session, the Indian equity market closed in the red, pressured by rate-sensitive sectors after the RBI left its key interest rates unchanged and maintained a ‘neutral’ policy outlook.
