Sensex, Nifty Snap Five-Day Losing Streak on Late Rally; Trade Talks Boost Sentiment
Indian stock markets ended in positive territory on Monday, with the Sensex and Nifty breaking a five-day decline following a strong late-session recovery. Investor confidence improved after indications of fresh trade dialogue between India and the United States. Early-session losses were sharply pared after the incoming U.S. ambassador to India confirmed that bilateral trade talks would commence on January 13. The BSE Sensex advanced 301.93 points, or 0.36%, to close at 83,878.17, while the NSE Nifty 50 climbed 106.95 points, or 0.42%, settling at 25,790.25. Both key indices were under significant pressure earlier in the day, with the Sensex tumbling up to 715 points and the Nifty slipping briefly below the 25,500 mark, before a shift in market mood helped alleviate trade-related anxieties. India and the U.S. remain actively engaged on trade matters, with the next round of discussions scheduled for Tuesday, according to Sergio Gor, Washington’s newly appointed ambassador to New Delhi, who spoke on Monday.
