Indian stocks traded sharply higher on Monday, with the Sensex and Nifty inching toward record highs as optimism over an earnings revival and renewed foreign inflows buoyed sentiment. Hopes that festive season demand, coupled with recent tax cuts and policy support, will lift corporate profits in the second half of FY26 added to the upbeat tone. Market sentiment turned strongly positive with notable strength in IT, private bank, and FMCG sectors. PSU banks and financial services also supported the uptrend, while pharma, auto, and realty added to the gains. Only minor weakness was seen in oil and mid-small caps, indicating broad-based market optimism. The Nifty 50 hit a record high of 26,277.35 in September last year, while the Sensex peaked at 85,978.25 around the same time. On Thursday, the Nifty 50 was just 0.7% below its record, after touching an intraday high of 26,099.70. The Sensex rose as much as 85,272.40, about 0.8% shy of its all-time high.
