Stock Market Recap: Sensex Ends Slightly Higher; NSE Nifty 50 Holds Above 24,600 After Volatile Session
Overview
Indian equity benchmarks closed slightly higher on Thursday, ending a six-week losing streak that had been driven by ongoing trade uncertainties and lackluster corporate earnings. The uptick was aided by gains in Infosys, following its acquisition of a stake in Australia’s Versent Group. However, investor sentiment remained cautious due to upcoming Russia–U.S. discussions over the Ukraine conflict during a shortened trading week.
The BSE Sensex edged up by 57.75 points (0.07%) to settle at 80,597.66, while the NSE Nifty 50 inched up 11.95 points (0.05%) to close at 24,631.30. Both indices posted a weekly gain of around 1%, halting their six-week downtrend. Broader indices also advanced, with small-cap stocks rising 0.7% and mid-caps climbing 0.9%.
IT and pharmaceutical sectors—both of which generate a significant share of revenues from the U.S.—posted notable gains, rising 1.3% and 3.5% respectively. The gains followed encouraging U.S. inflation data and an extension of the U.S.–China tariff détente.
Among standout performers, Apollo Hospitals soared 10.4% over the week, marking its best weekly return in nearly four years after delivering strong quarterly results.
Note: Indian stock markets will remain closed on Friday in observance of Independence Day.
