Stock Market Update: Sensex extends gains for 4th session, ends 123 pts higher; Nifty reclaims 25K; GAIL up 3%, NTPC climbs 2%
Indian equities closed on a positive note on Thursday, with the Nifty 50 marking its seventh consecutive day of gains after U.S. President Donald Trump stated he intended to hold discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ease trade tensions. Optimism over potential tariff negotiations outweighed profit-booking in IT counters, while recent cuts in Goods and Services Tax (GST) continued to buoy market sentiment. Key Indices The S&P BSE Sensex advanced 123.58 points (0.15%) to close at 81,548.73. The NSE Nifty 50 added 32.40 points (0.13%) to end at 25,005.50. Sectoral & Stock Movements On the 30-share Sensex, NTPC, Axis Bank, Power Grid, Bharti Airtel, Eternal, and Sun Pharma gained between 1–2%. IT stocks lost momentum, snapping a two-day uptrend. The IT index slipped 0.5%, dragged down by a 1.5% fall in Infosys ahead of its board meeting on a proposed buyback. Midcap and smallcap segments remained largely unchanged. Exchange operator BSE and brokerage Angel One dropped 4.6% and 5.2% respectively, after reports suggested that SEBI may look to gradually phase out weekly derivatives contracts. Market Context Both Nifty and Sensex have advanced 1.7% each in the past seven sessions, supported by domestic tax reliefs, hopes of a U.S. interest rate cut, and improving global trade outlook. Global Spotlight – Oracle’s Historic Surge Oracle Corp. shares skyrocketed 36% in a single session, boosting its market capitalization by $244 billion, following robust projections for its cloud infrastructure business, which is estimated to scale to $144 billion revenue by FY2030. For perspective, the one-day value addition in Oracle’s stock exceeded the combined market cap of India’s IT giants—TCS, Infosys, and HCL Tech. Even Reliance Industries’ $212 billion valuation looks smaller in comparison.
