Sugar Stocks Fall Up to 5% on Duty-Free Import Approval

Synopsis Sugar stocks faced significant selling pressure on Friday after the government approved duty-free imports of 1 million tonnes of raw sugar until October 31. The decision sparked concerns about higher domestic availability and possible pressure on sugar prices and company margins, leading investors to lock in recent gains. Shares of Balrampur Chini Mills, Dhampur Sugar Mills, Bajaj Hindusthan Sugar and several other sugar companies fell sharply, with declines of up to 5%. The stocks had recently advanced on the back of firm sugar prices, expectations of tighter supplies and improving demand ahead of the festive season. The import measure is intended to strengthen domestic sugar availability and help prevent a sharp rise in prices during the festive period. However, increased imports could cap domestic price gains and weigh on the profitability outlook for sugar manufacturers. The duty-free import facility will remain available until October 31. Investors are likely to track import volumes, domestic sugar prices, production estimates and further government policy measures for cues. The broader sugar sector also remained under pressure as market participants reassessed earnings expectations following the announcement. While the sector continues to benefit from healthy demand prospects, near-term sentiment may remain cautious amid concerns over increased supply and pricing pressure.
