$TMCV to Adopt Chery-Based Platform for Avinya Premium EVs, Sources Indicate

$TMCV is set to utilize a vehicle platform sourced from Chinese automaker Chery for its upcoming Avinya premium electric vehicle range, according to people familiar with the matter. The decision comes after delays in a previously planned program that was to be built on a platform developed by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Tata Motors' British luxury vehicle subsidiary. Initially, $TMCV intended to launch the Avinya lineup in 2025 using JLR’s Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA). However, the schedule was pushed back to 2027 following setbacks in JLR’s manufacturing plans in India, leading the company to explore alternative solutions. Under the revised strategy, $TMCV will employ the Freelander platform developed by Chery Jaguar Land Rover, the China-based joint venture between Chery and JLR. Production of Avinya models is expected to take place at Tata Motors’ recently inaugurated manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu. In June 2024, Chery Jaguar Land Rover announced plans to build electric vehicles on Chery’s architecture under the Freelander brand, which is licensed by JLR and was initially intended for the Chinese market before expanding to international markets.
