Why did the RBI give a Jumbo rate cut today?
Today the RBI implemented a significant monetary policy action by reducing the repo rate by 50 basis points to 5.50% and the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) by 100 basis points to 3%. This marks the third consecutive rate cut in 2025, totaling a 100 bps reduction. The policy shift was driven by subdued inflation, which provided the RBI room to prioritize economic growth amid global uncertainties. Key Reasons for the Aggressive Policy Easing 1. Subdued Inflation - Retail inflation fell to 3.16% in April, the lowest in six years and well below the RBI's 4% target. Core inflation remains muted, providing room for monetary easing. 2. Moderating Economic Growth - India's GDP grew by 7.4% in Q4 FY2025, but full-year growth is projected at 6.5%, a four-year low. Indicators like credit growth, auto sales, and household income momentum are showing signs of deceleration. 3. Global Economic Uncertainties -Ongoing geopolitical tensions and trade policy shifts, particularly from the U.S., are impacting global demand and investment flows. 4. Ample Liquidity and Credit Cycle Concerns -The RBI has injected approximately ₹8.3 lakh crore into the banking system since January to ensure liquidity. Credit growth has slowed to 9.8% as of mid-May, prompting calls for measures to stimulate lending. Implications of the Policy Measures 1. Lower Borrowing Costs: Home loan rates could dip below 7.75%, reducing EMIs for borrowers. 2. Stimulated Investment: Reduced interest rates may encourage businesses to invest and expand. 3. Enhanced Liquidity: Cheaper credit can boost consumption and support economic growth. Forward Guidance The RBI has shifted its policy stance from "accommodative" to "neutral," indicating a more data-dependent approach moving forward. This suggests that while the central bank remains supportive of growth, it will closely monitor economic indicators before implementing further rate changes. $HDFCBANK , $SBIN
