SEBI needs to be proactive!

SEBI can create a conducive environment for retails investors to grow by promoting investor education and strengthening the market infrastructure. They should stop overprotecting the investors by bringing unnecessary regulations and recognize that retail investors play a pivotal role in the financial markets. One such example of overregulation is putting investment limits on retail investors subscribing to IPOs. It restricts the maximum amount they can invest. While this rule aims to prevent retail investors from allocating too much of their portfolio to a single investment, it may limit their ability to capitalize on potentially lucrative IPO opportunities. Other example is SEBI asking financial institutions to give extensive disclosures. This is again too much information for the retail investors to digest and understand. More often than not they ignore such disclosures. What they really would prefer is precise, to the point and simple disclosure which is not overwhelming.
