IDBI
ank Limited (IDBI) jumped 8.98% after the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the sale of a 60.72% stake in the bank to Canada's Fairfax Financial Holdings for ₹52,878 crore. The approval came on October 14, and today is the first full session reacting to it.
The government will sell 30.48% and LIC will sell 30.24%. The buyer is 10955230 Canada Inc, a Fairfax entity, paying ₹52,877.07 crore in total. After the sale, the government will hold 15% and LIC 19%. Once completed, it will be the largest FDI deal in India's financial sector and the biggest strategic disinvestment since Air India.
The approval ends a privatisation process that dragged on for years. Private ownership could bring faster decisions, new capital plans and better use of IDBI's balance sheet. Fairfax already owns CSB Bank, and reports suggest it may later combine IDBI with group businesses such as Digit and IIFL Capital.
Two points are easy to miss. The ₹52,878 crore goes to the government and LIC, not to IDBI Bank, so the bank gets no fresh capital from this deal. The acquisition price works out to about ₹81 per share, which gives investors a clear benchmark to compare against the market price. The deal also still needs regulatory approvals before it closes.
Investors should watch RBI and other regulatory approvals, the deal completion timeline, details of any open offer to public shareholders, and Fairfax's plans for capital, management and possible mergers. The key question is whether new ownership can lift IDBI's growth and returns enough to justify the rally.
