Sun Pharma faces pricing pressure despite tariff relief

SUNPHARMA
shares fell over 2% after the company agreed to extend Most Favored Nation (MFN) pricing to US state Medicaid programmes and future innovative medicine launches as part of an agreement with the US government. While the deal could improve affordability for US patients, the pricing commitments may put pressure on realisations from medicines covered under the agreement. The financial impact remains uncertain as the company has not disclosed the products involved, applicable pricing benchmarks or the portion of sales that could be affected. On the positive side, Sun Pharma has secured a significant tariff concession, with the US government agreeing to delay the application of Section 232 tariffs on its innovative pharmaceutical products for more than two years. This is important given that the US contributes around 27% of the company's global revenue and remains its largest market for innovative medicines. The company has also been expanding its higher-value specialty and innovative medicines portfolio, which accounts for around 22% of sales. However, the agreement creates a near-term uncertainty around pricing and margins, particularly as Sun Pharma's exposure to the US is expected to increase following its proposed acquisition of Organon. Although the tariff relief provides meaningful protection against a potential cost headwind, investors will need to assess whether the benefit adequately offsets the impact of lower pricing on affected products. Overall, the agreement is a mixed development: tariff relief is positive for cost visibility, but MFN pricing introduces uncertainty around US realisations and future innovative drug launches. Given Sun Pharma's strong long-term positioning but near-term pricing uncertainty, investors may adopt a **cautiously positive** view while monitoring the financial impact of the agreement and execution of its US growth strategy.
