Before the council meeting, the auto industry demands a unified GST.

Ahead of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council meeting on September 3–4, the auto industry is once again in the spotlight as manufacturers have reiterated their demand for a consistent GST rate for the entire industry. While automakers, including Eicher Motors, the parent firm of Royal Enfield, have expressed worries about a potential GST hike on premium motorcycles, industry group SIAM has urged the government to rationalize rates. Raising the GST on two-wheelers over 350cc would "damage a segment vital to India’s global edge," said Siddhartha Lal, MD of Eicher Motors, who also claimed that a split tax regime would hinder investments, limit global competitiveness, and generate little money.
