Adani Airports’ Airline Proposal Raises Questions Over Regulatory Filings

A reported June 4 letter from Adani Airports Holdings to the Airports Authority of India (AAI), shared by TMC MP Mahua Moitra, has raised questions about the Adani Group’s potential interest in the airline business. The letter reportedly seeks a waiver to allow Adani Defence & Aerospace and its affiliates to invest in, establish, acquire, own or control a scheduled airline, along with permission for Adani Group airport operators to hold equity in an airline. It also references collaboration with Brazilian aerospace major Embraer to develop regional aircraft manufacturing capabilities in India and highlights potential connectivity to Tier-II and Tier-III cities. The request relates to Clause 2.5(vi) of the OMDA dated April 4, 2006, and includes provisions for obtaining an Air Operator Certificate (AOC). However, Adani Enterprises stated on July 24 that reports of an airline launch were “baseless and factually incorrect” and that it was not evaluating any proposal to enter the airline business.
