Aurobindo Pharma Expands Global HIV Access with Licensing Agreement Covering 129 Countries
Aurobindo Pharma Ltd has signed a non-exclusive, royalty-free voluntary licensing agreement with MSD (Merck & Co.) to manufacture and supply generic alimatravir, an investigational HIV prevention medicine, across 129 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), subject to successful regulatory approvals. The company is among a select group of global generic manufacturers chosen for this partnership, highlighting its strong manufacturing capabilities and global healthcare presence.
Notably, the agreement was signed before the completion of Phase 3 clinical trial enrolment, marking a first in the field of HIV prevention and allowing manufacturers to begin scaling up production well in advance. The 129 eligible countries account for the majority of new HIV diagnoses globally, and the early licensing framework is expected to support faster and broader access to affordable treatment once approvals are secured.
While commercial supply will depend on successful clinical development and regulatory clearance, the partnership reflects a proactive approach to improving global access to HIV prevention therapies and reinforces Aurobindo Pharma’s growing role in expanding access to high-quality medicines in emerging markets.
