Aurobindo Pharma Strengthens Biologics Play with $150–175 Million Strategic Expansion

AUROPHARMA
has taken a significant step in scaling its biologics capabilities as its subsidiary, TheraNym Biologics, expands its partnership with Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) by signing an additional product schedule under their existing May 2024 contract manufacturing agreement. As part of this expansion, the company will invest around USD 150–175 million (approximately ₹1,250–₹1,450 crore) to set up a greenfield biologics manufacturing facility (“Unit 2”) equipped with mammalian cell culture bioreactors of 60,000 litres capacity, along with advanced downstream purification infrastructure. The facility will focus on producing biologic drug substances for both domestic and global markets, with TheraNym responsible for building, manufacturing, and supplying products to MSD under the agreement. This move not only deepens Aurobindo’s presence in the high-growth biologics segment but also strengthens its positioning in the global contract manufacturing space, reflecting a strategic shift towards complex, high-value pharmaceuticals and long-term revenue visibility.
