Axis Bank Moves Strategically to Take Control of Axis Max Life Insurance

AXISBANK
is set to strengthen its grip on the insurance sector by planning to raise its stake in Axis Max Life Insurance from 19.99% to nearly 30%. This additional 10% acquisition is on top of the ₹336 crore invested in June 2024 which would make Axis Bank the official promoter, replacing Max Financial Services. The stake is held through Axis Bank and its subsidiaries, Axis Capital and Axis Securities. While the move signals a clear intent to tighten control over its insurance arm and streamline operations, it hinges on regulatory approval from the RBI. The bank is likely to proceed with the application once the current SEBI inquiry into its earlier stake purchase is resolved. Looking ahead, Axis Bank may explore restructuring options, including a reverse merger of Max Financial Services into Max Life or directly listing the insurance business, aligning with its broader strategy of deepening presence in the financial services ecosystem.
