BHEL Achieves a Major Milestone with India's First Indigenous 1200 kV Ultra-High Voltage Transformer
Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) has achieved a significant milestone by successfully designing, manufacturing and type-testing India's first indigenously developed 1200 kV Ultra High Voltage Alternating Current (UHVAC) transformer with a 333 MVA rating, placing India among a select group of countries with this advanced technology.
Developed entirely through two years of in-house research and development, the transformer was built at BHEL's advanced manufacturing facility in Bhopal under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PowerGrid. The 333 MVA, 1150/400/33 kV single-phase auto transformer will be installed at India's first experimental 1200 kV National Test Station in Bina, Madhya Pradesh, supporting the country's transition from the existing 765 kV transmission network to a next-generation 1200 kV power grid.
In another key achievement, BHEL has also successfully tested and dispatched India's first indigenous 500 MVA, 765 kV transformer for a PowerGrid project and manufactured a 1200 kV, 180 MVA transformer for its Ultra High Voltage Test Laboratory in Bhopal. With manufacturing facilities in Bhopal, Hyderabad and Jhansi, BHEL has an annual production capacity of 45,000 MVA for transformers and reactors, including a dedicated 12,000 MVA facility in Bhopal for large EHV, HVDC and UHVAC transformers and reactors. This achievement highlights BHEL's growing technological capabilities and supports India's long-term objective of strengthening a self-reliant and future-ready power transmission infrastructure.
