) has begun supplying underslung traction transformers for the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train project, marking a significant move into the semi-high-speed propulsion segment with operational speeds up to 160 kmph and design speeds of 180 kmph. The project is being executed by a BHEL-led consortium in partnership with TRSL, reinforcing BHEL’s positioning in higher-value railway equipment.
A flag-off ceremony for the first batch of these transformers was conducted at BHEL’s Jhansi plant, while traction converters for the same trains were earlier dispatched from its Bengaluru facility, indicating a multi-location manufacturing footprint. The transformers are being shipped to Kolkata for final trainset assembly, highlighting BHEL’s role across the propulsion value chain.
Beyond transformers, BHEL has also developed and manufactured traction motors at its Bhopal unit, completing a core suite of propulsion components for the Vande Bharat Sleeper configuration. This integrated capability can support future orders in the semi-high-speed category and deepen localisation in critical train technologies.
Separately, BHEL-Jhansi has secured an order for Rail Borne Maintenance Vehicles (RBMVs), expanding its presence in specialised rolling stock used for track construction, inspection, repair and maintenance. These domestically manufactured RBMVs align with Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat priorities by reducing dependence on imported maintenance technologies and improving safety, ride quality and asset life through mechanised, precise track upkeep.
