Coal India & DVC Collaborate on ₹16,500 Cr Thermal Expansion in Jharkhand

COALINDIA
and Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) have signed a non-binding MoU to jointly develop a 1,600 MW (2×800 MW) ultra-supercritical thermal power plant as an expansion of the existing Chandrapura Thermal Power Station in Jharkhand. The ₹16,500 crore project will be executed under a 50:50 equity partnership. Coal supply will be ensured from nearby coalfields operated by CIL’s subsidiaries, Bharat Coking Coal Ltd and Central Coalfields Ltd, enhancing fuel security and reducing logistics cost. In Q4 FY24, Coal India reported a net profit of ₹8,491.2 crore, surpassing CNBC-TV18’s poll estimate of ₹7,799 crore, though it marked a 17.5% YoY decline from ₹10,291.7 crore. Revenue stood at ₹35,779.8 crore, marginally ahead of the estimated ₹35,558 crore, but down 1% YoY. EBITDA came in at ₹12,317.2 crore vs. the estimate of ₹10,098 crore, yet it declined 5% YoY.
