has taken a major step in its diversification strategy by forming "Coal Gas India Ltd.," a joint venture with GAIL (India) Ltd. to enter the synthetic natural gas (SNG) market. Incorporated on March 25, 2025, with CIN U19201WB2025GOI277773, this new entity will focus on coal-to-SNG conversion and related chemical manufacturing. Coal India holds a 51% stake with an investment of ₹51,000, while GAIL owns 49% with ₹49,000. The JV will establish necessary infrastructure, including captive coal mining, coal beneficiation, and coal processing facilities.
This move aligns with India's energy transition strategy and aims to leverage coal gasification for cleaner fuel alternatives. The formation was approved by the Ministry of Coal, DIPAM, and NITI Aayog on February 19, 2025. Meanwhile, Coal India is set to release its provisional production figures soon, with a full-year target of 838 MT, requiring over 100 MT in the final stretch to meet projections. Investors will be watching closely as the company expands beyond conventional coal mining into a more sustainable energy ecosystem.
