has announced a strategic investment of ₹3,300 crore (US$357.0 million) to develop 8 new coking coal washeries, along with an additional ₹300 crore (US$32.5 million) for upgrading existing facilities, as part of its broader effort to enhance domestic coal quality and reduce import dependence; these washeries are expected to add a total processing capacity of 21.5 million tonnes per year and are likely to be operational by FY30, strengthening India’s coal beneficiation infrastructure and supporting key sectors like steel manufacturing, where coking coal is a critical input; given that domestic coking coal typically has high ash content, this investment aims to improve usability, ensure more reliable supply, and reduce foreign exchange outflows linked to imports, while also building on the company’s existing network of washeries to drive long-term efficiency and self-reliance in the energy ecosystem.
