Dixon Technologies Targets Low-Cost Display Module Market with Chinese Partner HKC

DIXON
is planning to team up with Chinese company HKC to manufacture display modules for tablets, laptops, and mobile phones priced below ₹15,000. For this, Dixon has applied for government approval under Press Note 3, which requires clearance for foreign investments from countries that share a land border with India like China, Nepal, Bangladesh, and others. The application was submitted six weeks ago, and the company is awaiting a decision. According to Chairman Sunil Vachani, Korean and Taiwanese firms have exited the low-end display space, creating an opportunity that Dixon aims to capture. The company has already started the design and construction of its new factory and plans to begin commercial production by next year. If approval doesn't come through, Dixon will consider alternate plans. The company is currently part of five PLI (Production Linked Incentive) schemes across telecom, LEDs, air conditioners, and IT hardware and has successfully crossed the sales threshold in all five schemes. It’s now aiming for backward integration in IT hardware and has also proposed a new PLI scheme for high-value components like compressors and motors. On the issue of tariffs, Vachani noted that these should not be seen as a long-term hurdle and encouraged the industry to focus on design-led manufacturing and component development to stay globally competitive.
