GRSE Launches Construction of GSI Coastal Research Vessels

Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (

GRSE
) Ltd, a key defence public sector undertaking, initiated production of two coastal research vessels (CRVs) for the Geological Survey of India (GSI) via a ceremonial steel-cutting event on February 13, 2026. The ceremony occurred with GSI Director General Asit Saha and senior GRSE and armed forces officials present. Each 64-meter-long and 13-meter-wide vessel is designed for offshore geological mapping, mineral exploration with dredging, ocean environment monitoring, and research within India's exclusive economic zone (EEZ). They feature advanced onboard laboratories for data processing and sample analysis. This project aligns with GRSE's diverse order book, including one ocean research vessel for NCPOR, one acoustic research ship for NPOL-DRDO, 12 warships for the Indian Navy, eight multi-purpose vessels for a German firm, and 13 hybrid ferries for West Bengal.
