HAL’s ₹13,500 Crore IMRH Plan Moves Closer to CCS
Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) could soon receive approval from the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) for the design development phase of its Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH), with a ₹13,500 crore allocation already cleared by the costing committee. The 13-tonne IMRH is being developed as an indigenous medium-lift helicopter for the Indian Air Force and Indian Army, with the eventual objective of replacing the ageing Russian-origin Mi-17 fleet.
The programme is closely linked to the development of the Aravalli turboshaft engine by HAL and Safran Helicopter Engines through their joint venture, SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt Ltd. The new-generation engine is designed for the 3,500–4,000 shaft-horsepower class and will power both the twin-engine IMRH and its naval variant, the Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter (DBMRH). The engine contract covers its full product lifecycle, including design, development, manufacturing, supply and lifecycle support.
Since the engine must be developed, integrated and tested before either helicopter can enter operational service, its development timeline will be an important factor for both programmes. A potential CCS approval would therefore represent a key step toward the development phase of HAL’s indigenous medium-lift helicopter programme.
