Hindustan Copper Strengthens Capacity with ₹470 Cr Expansion Push

HINDCOPPER
has secured a major contract worth ₹470 crore to develop a 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) copper concentrator plant at its Malanjkhand project in Madhya Pradesh, marking a significant step toward boosting domestic copper production amid rising demand from sectors like electric vehicles, renewable energy, and infrastructure. The project, awarded to a private engineering partner, is expected to be completed within 27 months and aligns with the company’s broader strategy to scale up ore production capacity to 12.2 MTPA by FY2031 from current levels, reducing India’s heavy reliance on imports, which currently exceeds 90% of copper concentrate demand. While the expansion highlights strong long-term growth potential, it comes alongside operational and financial challenges, including a ₹929 crore legal demand notice from the Jharkhand government, which the company is contesting. Overall, this development reflects a balanced outlook capacity expansion driven by structural demand tailwinds, but with execution and regulatory risks remaining key monitorables for investors.
