India’s Biopharma Push Could Create the Next Wave of Healthcare Growth
India is rapidly strengthening its position in the global biopharmaceutical industry through increased focus on innovation, manufacturing, clinical research, and regulatory development. At the 2nd Pharma Summit & Awards 2026, policymakers highlighted the growing importance of biopharmaceuticals in the future of healthcare and outlined the vision of the Biopharma SHAKTI initiative, which aims to launch 100 biologics by 2047. With biologics expected to account for nearly 40% of global prescription drugs by 2031, India is working to expand its capabilities in advanced biologics while continuing its leadership in affordable generic medicines. Government-backed initiatives such as the PRIP Scheme, National Biopharma Mission, and BIRAC programs including BIG, SBIRI, and BIPP are supporting research, innovation, manufacturing, startups, and the development of next-generation therapies. The broader objective is to strengthen clinical research infrastructure, build a skilled talent pool, improve supply chain resilience, accelerate drug discovery, and enhance India's competitiveness across the global biopharmaceutical value chain. This long-term policy focus reflects India's ambition to emerge as a major global hub for biologics, advanced therapies, and pharmaceutical innovation while supporting the vision of a developed and healthier nation by 2047. Key beneficiaries: $BIOCON, $SYNGENE, $LAURUSLABS, and $GUJTHEM are likely to be among the strongest long-term beneficiaries if India successfully scales biologics manufacturing, biotech innovation, and CDMO services over the coming decades.
