IRFC Expands Beyond Railways with ₹1,000 Crore Power Sector Deal
Indian Railway Finance Corporation (
IRFC
) sanctioned and fully disbursed a ₹1,000 crore term loan to Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (MAHAGENCO), marking its first transaction of the financial year and reinforcing its strategic shift beyond traditional railway financing.
The funding is aimed at enhancing MAHAGENCO’s operational capacity and strengthening power supply in Maharashtra, where it remains the largest electricity generator.
This move highlights IRFC’s growing role as a diversified infrastructure financier, with increasing exposure to sectors such as power, mining, logistics, and urban transport.
Notably, this development follows a significantly larger ₹12,842 crore loan agreement with Hindustan Urvarak & Rasayan Limited (HURL), indicating a clear scale-up in non-railway lending activities.
Despite expanding its loan book, IRFC continues to maintain a strong financial position with zero NPAs, reflecting disciplined risk management.
