L&T-MHI Wins Major Dubai Airport APM Project
Larsen & Toubro (L&T), in partnership with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), has secured a turnkey project to develop the world’s largest Automated People Mover (APM) system at Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport, with an estimated value of ₹2,500–₹5,000 crore (US$261.48–522.96 million).
The approximately 50-km driverless network will connect 9 stations through both underground and elevated sections, linking airport terminals and key facilities. The consortium will handle the complete project lifecycle, including design, construction, supply, testing, commissioning and operational readiness, with completion targeted for December 2031.
L&T will manage key infrastructure such as guideways, DC traction substations, power distribution, signalling, telecommunications, onboard communication systems, platform screen doors and depot equipment, while MHI Mobility Engineering Services will design, procure and test 165 APM vehicles and the signalling system.
The project forms part of Dubai’s airport expansion programme, with Al Maktoum International ultimately expected to handle up to 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of freight annually, highlighting L&T’s involvement in large-scale international transportation infrastructure.
