L&T Secures Significant LIGO India Order

) has won a significant contract valued between ₹1,000 crore and ₹2,500 crore from India's Department of Atomic Energy. The order involves its heavy civil infrastructure and heavy engineering units for constructing the LIGO India Observatory in Aundha, Hingoli district, Maharashtra. This flagship mega-science project, aimed at detecting gravitational waves from cosmic events using laser interferometry over multikilometer detectors, stems from collaboration between Indian institutions like RRCAT and IPR, the US LIGO Laboratory, Caltech, and MIT. L&T's responsibilities encompass engineering, procurement, construction of precision vibration-sensitive infrastructure, an 8 km ultra-high vacuum beam tube, and integration of mechanical, electrical, HVAC, fire safety, vacuum controls, and utilities.
