LIoyds Metals & Energy is strengthening its global presence in the metals and mining space by advancing plans to reopen the historic Panguna copper mine in Papua New Guinea (PNG), one of the world’s largest undeveloped copper resources, which has remained closed for nearly four decades since 1989.
The mine is estimated to hold about 5.3 billion tonnes of copper ore along with significant gold reserves, making it a globally significant asset. The company has established a subsidiary in PNG and has been selected as a preferred partner by local authorities to explore redevelopment opportunities, ahead of even larger global competitors, for a structured long-term mining cooperation.
A non-binding agreement also allows the company a 90-day exclusivity period to conduct technical, financial, environmental, and social due diligence before finalizing any binding arrangement. This move aligns with Lloyds’ broader strategy of expanding into critical minerals like copper and cobalt, with its existing operations in Africa already producing around 12,000 tonnes per annum of copper cathodes and targeting further scale-up to 30,000 tonnes per annum.
