Mazagon Dock and France’s Naval Group Forge Exclusive Pact to Offer Advanced Submarines
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (
MAZDOCK
), India’s leading warship manufacturer, has entered into an exclusive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with France’s Naval Group to jointly propose evolved submarines to a friendly foreign nation as part of an ongoing acquisition programme. This partnership builds on their existing collaboration established in July 2025 for the transfer of technology to integrate DRDO-developed energy system plugs into India’s Kalvari-class submarines. The integration process, known as Jumboisation, involves precision engineering to insert the new energy plug into the submarine’s hull, enhancing operational endurance. Naval Group will provide technical oversight, proprietary materials, and specialised training to MDL engineers. Additionally, the Defence Ministry had earlier signed two contracts worth approximately ₹2,867 crore — including ₹1,990 crore with MDL for developing an Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) plug and ₹877 crore with Naval Group for incorporating an advanced electronic heavyweight torpedo system. The agreement underscores MDL’s growing global competitiveness and the deepening of Indo-French cooperation in high-end naval technology.
