NTPC
has taken a decisive step toward strengthening India’s clean energy base by signing a non-binding MoU with Électricité de France (EDF) to explore the development of nuclear power projects in the country.
The collaboration will evaluate advanced reactor technologies, including EDF’s EPR, while assessing site feasibility, project economics, tariffs, and localization opportunities, alongside technical knowledge transfer and capability building. With an installed capacity of over 89 GW and 32 GW under construction, NTPC is targeting a scale-up to 149 GW by 2032, including 60 GW from renewable energy, reflecting a balanced transition strategy.
Importantly, the company is also aiming to develop nearly 30 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047, aligning with India’s broader ambition of achieving 100 GW nuclear capacity, thereby positioning nuclear power as a stable, low-carbon baseload complement to renewables amid rising energy demand.
