ONGC Takes Strategic 50% Stake in Ethane Shipping JVs to Strengthen Petrochemical Feedstock Access

Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (

ONGC
) has strategically acquired a 50% equity stake in two joint venture entities – Bharat Ethane One IFSC Pvt Ltd and Bharat Ethane Two IFSC Pvt Ltd – by subscribing 2,00,000 equity shares at ₹100 each in both, for a total outlay of ₹40 crore, forming equal 50:50 partnerships with Japan’s Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL). These JVs will each own and operate a Very Large Ethane Carrier (VLEC) under the Indian flag to transport ethane from the United States to India to supply feedstock for ONGC’s petrochemicals arm, ONGC Petro Additions Ltd (OPaL), enhancing integration across ONGC’s energy value chain and securing long-term ethane logistics capacity as ethane imports are expected to start around mid-2028. This move marks ONGC’s deliberate expansion into specialised maritime logistics while leveraging MOL’s global shipping expertise alongside its own operational scale.
