RBI clears SMBC to raise stake in Yes Bank up to 24.99%

YESBANK
announced that the Reserve Bank of India has approved Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) to increase its shareholding in the bank from the current 20% to as much as 24.99%, with the approval valid for one year. SMBC had acquired its initial 20% stake in May 2025, comprising 13.19% from SBI and 6.81% from seven other domestic banks, through a secondary share purchase. Despite the higher ownership, SMBC will not be classified as a promoter. As of June 2025, domestic lenders together held 33.7% of Yes Bank, with SBI as the largest shareholder at 23.96%, while foreign investors CA Basque Investments and Verventa Holdings held 4.22% and 9.2%, respectively. This move signals stronger strategic alignment and further global participation in India’s private banking sector.
