RBI Fines Shriram Finance for KYC and Credit Reporting Lapses

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a ₹5.8 lakh penalty on Shriram Finance Ltd for non-compliance with regulatory norms, including KYC guidelines and credit information reporting standards. The violations include failure to implement risk-based account categorization, inadequate contractual clauses with direct sales agents regarding RBI inspections, and non-submission of mandatory corporate relationship data for FY 2022-23. Following an inspection based on the company’s March 31, 2023 financials, RBI identified lapses, issued a show-cause notice, and determined that corrective action was necessary. While this penalty reinforces RBI’s stringent regulatory oversight, it does not impact Shriram Finance’s transactions with customers but serves as a strong reminder that adherence to compliance frameworks is non-negotiable for financial institutions operating in a highly regulated environment.
