Vedanta Aluminium Strengthens Raw Material Security with Karlapat Bauxite Block Win in Odisha
Vedanta Aluminium Ltd has taken a significant step towards strengthening its long-term raw material security after its subsidiary, Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd (BALCO), was declared the preferred bidder for the Karlapat Bauxite Block in Odisha through a government e-auction. The mining lease was auctioned by the Directorate of Mines and Geology, Government of Odisha, with tenders invited on May 29, 2026, and BALCO receiving the preferred bidder notification on August 7, 2026. The Karlapat Bauxite Block spans 1,822.61 hectares, is explored up to the G2 level, and is estimated to contain around 248 million tonnes of bauxite reserves, supporting Vedanta Aluminium’s backward integration strategy. Alongside this strategic development, the company reported a strong operational performance for the June quarter, with net profit rising 33.8% quarter-on-quarter to ₹5,629 crore from ₹4,207 crore, while revenue increased 12% to ₹21,393 crore. EBITDA grew 23.3% to ₹10,299 crore from ₹8,352 crore, and the EBITDA margin expanded to 48.14% from 43.68%. The company also achieved its highest-ever quarterly aluminium production, with output increasing 5% year-on-year and 3% sequentially. Alumina production rose 41% year-on-year despite a 6% sequential decline due to unplanned shutdowns, while value-added product output grew 14% year-on-year and 4% quarter-on-quarter. Overall, the acquisition of a large bauxite resource, combined with strong financial and operational performance, reinforces Vedanta Aluminium’s focus on enhancing resource security and supporting future production growth. $VEDL Disclaimer: This post is for informational purposes only and not a recommendation to buy or sell any securities.
